How to choose POS software for a small business in Pakistan
· 5 min read
Start with the counter, not the feature list
The best POS is the one your cashier is happy to use at six in the evening with a queue at the counter. Before you compare features, watch how a sale really happens in your shop: how items are found, how discounts are given, how credit customers are handled.
Ask any vendor to run that exact sale on a demo. If it takes more steps than your current way, the software will be used badly or not at all.
Check these six things
Most small shops are well served by a system that does these six things properly.
- Finding items quickly by name, SKU or barcode.
- Stock that reduces on every sale and increases on every purchase.
- Customer balances for people who buy on credit.
- Discounts and returns that are recorded, not just given.
- Separate staff logins with control over who can change prices.
- Accounts that fill from sales, so your accountant is not re-typing bills.
Ask about the things that go wrong
Ask whether it works without internet. Many cloud systems do not, and that matters if your connection is unreliable. Ask what happens when you sell something that is out of stock, how mistakes are corrected, and whether you can export your data.
Ask what is not included. A vendor who can tell you clearly what the product does not do is usually more trustworthy than one who says yes to everything.
Start small, then grow
You do not need every module on day one. A shop can start with billing, stock, purchases and customer balances, then add proper accounting and reports when the business needs them.
