Does a retail business need ERP software?
· 4 min read
ERP in plain words
ERP stands for enterprise resource planning, which is a heavy name for a simple idea: one system where sales, stock, purchases, customers and accounts all use the same information. When you sell something, stock goes down, the customer account updates and the books reflect it, without anyone typing it three times.
When a simple POS is enough
If you have one small shop, no credit customers and you are happy to give your accountant a daily total, a simple billing tool may be enough.
Signs you have outgrown it
You are likely ready for a connected system when:
- You sell on credit and lose track of balances.
- You buy from several suppliers and forget what you owe.
- You have more than one shop or godown.
- Your accountant spends days rebuilding the month from bills.
- You cannot say what your profit is without waiting for the books.
What to expect from the move
The first week is data entry: products, opening stock, customers and suppliers. After that, daily work gets lighter because the reports come from the same entries. Start with the parts you need and add accounting and reports when ready.
